Volvo Ocean Race

99 % of the sailing I have done is in protected in-shore waters - it was therefore quite unexpected when Ericsson Racing Team invited me for a test session on Lanzarote with the intension to make me a crew member of there Volvo Ocean Race campaign.  Although my commitment was only as In Port Race tactician for the Nordic team and not the offshore racing it was still a different atmosphere and a new playing field for me.

The In Port Races are short intense races taking place at the stop-over destinations of the Volvo Ocean Race. The powerful VO70 boat with canting-keel and big sailplane is a hard to handle and manoeuvres on the short courses. We knew there was no room for errors and even small mistakes would be penalised. Unfortunately we did not manage to get clean starts and keep out of close situations with other boats in the beginning of the series. Later we improved but never enough to reach the podium, which was our goal.

For sure the short time together with the rest of the team, which spend a lot of time racing on the Ocean, was a challenging element in being a part of the In Port Crew. I am sure our result it is back to who did the best preparations and had the most experience, but with the given conditions I think we got the best out of it. It was very inspiring for me to be a part of a Ocean Race team and the Ocean Race has caught my interest - so if the offer is there I'm ready to go the whole way around the planet.
