Just returned from the 33rd America's Cup in Valencia. Great to be back in Valencia and see all the well-known faces from the last Cup in 2007. Of course it was frustrating not to be a part of the competition, but at least it is was far more interesting than following the decisions from Supreme Court in New York.
When first race got underway it was clear to all that this was not going to be a normal race. It was a speed contest and the best design would win - no matter what. As always you might say, but this was extreme. The advantage of BMW Oracles wing was amazing - even though Alinghi did some major mistakes it was not the reason why they lost. I was invited to BMW Oracle base and to see the racing boat and only parked in the harbor it was scary! A chat with Joe Newton and Dirk de Ridder who was trimming the wing, made it clear they had made a great step forward in sailing technology. The control and efficiency of the wing was mind-blowing and will be one of the innovations that will be remembered in the history of the America's Cup. I guess that is a big part of the fuzz about the cup, but I miss the close boat on boat action and match race positioning. To watch the speed difference of two boats gets boring after a while. Let's hope the work of the challenging teams and BMW Oracle turns out to be a fair and well thought protocol, which can bring some continuity in the future America's Cups.
